Environmental Risk Assessments
In recent years there has been an increased concern for the protection of the environment. The costs associated with pollution abatement and clean-up have prompted many industries to evaluate new or expanded pollution controls prior to the start-up of new facilities or industrial processes. By undertaking an 'environmental risk assessment' a client is able to establish costs for the manufacturing process, and in addition ascertain a monetary value for the risks of any environmental liabilities associated with the manufacturing process.

Environmental risk assessment is not a standard procedure, rather it varies with the circumstances of each project. Although the tests carried out are standard, each case is different and requires its own specific program of tests. Air Earth & Water Environmental Consultants Ltd. prepares a specific customised `Environmental risk assessment' testing program for each project undertaken.

Environmental risk assessments should include:

  • evaluation of increased hydraulic and contaminant loadings to the sanitary sewer system with regards to existing permits
  • evaluation of regulated atmospheric emissions under MOE (Reg. 308 R.S.O.) and certificates of approval required for new or existing stacks
  • proper control of all chemicals used in the process, as defined under WHMIS protocols
  • disposal of waste liquids and solids as controlled by Reg. 558 (formerly 347), R.S.O., or equivalent
The final result of an environmental risk assessment is a clearer overall view of a proposed expansion or start-up process, whether it be a unit operation or a new facility. The information - based on accurate data - enables management to assess the need for change compared to the cost associated with such changes. A reasoned decision can therefore be made, both from an economic and environmental standpoint as to the most practical solution.
